Why Spring Is Miserable for Some Kids

Every spring, the same scene plays out in homes everywhere.

The flowers bloom. Trees turn green again. Kids finally get the chance to run outside after a long winter.

But instead of playing outside, some kids are stuck inside with a box of tissues.

Red, watery eyes.
A runny nose that never stops.
Sneezing that seems to come out of nowhere.

Parents try everything.

They track pollen counts.
They keep the windows closed.
They start allergy medications.

And still… Nothing really fixes the problem.

So the question most parents start asking is this:

Why does my child struggle so much with allergies while other kids seem totally fine?

The answer may surprise you.

Because the real issue often isn’t the pollen at all.

The Real Root Cause of Allergies

Most people are told allergies are caused by pollen.

But pollen itself isn’t actually dangerous.

It’s not a virus.
It’s not a bacteria.
It’s not something your immune system should be attacking.

Pollen is harmless.

So why does the body react like it’s under attack?

The answer lies in something many people don’t realize:

Your immune system is controlled by your nervous system.

For years, science believed these two systems worked independently. Today we know they are deeply connected.

One of the most important players in this connection is a nerve called the vagus nerve.

Think of the vagus nerve like an air traffic controller for your immune system.

When the nervous system is balanced and regulated, the vagus nerve sends calm signals to the immune system saying:

“Everything is safe. No need to react.”

But when the nervous system is stuck in stress mode, those signals change.

Instead of calm instructions, the immune system receives a message that says:

“Danger. Attack!”

That’s when the body releases histamines, inflammation, and all the classic allergy symptoms.

The Gut, The Immune System, and Allergies

Another huge piece of the puzzle is the gut.

About 70 to 80 percent of the immune system actually originates in gut tissue.

And guess what regulates the gut?

The vagus nerve.

This nerve travels from the brainstem down through the digestive system, helping control digestion, inflammation, and immune responses.

When vagal tone is healthy, the gut lining stays strong and acts as a protective barrier.

But when the nervous system becomes dysregulated, that gut barrier can start to break down.

This allows things that normally stay inside the digestive tract to leak into the bloodstream.

When that happens, the immune system becomes hypersensitive and begins overreacting to harmless triggers like:

  • Pollen
  • Dust
  • Pet dander
  • Certain foods

This is why many kids with seasonal allergies also struggle with food sensitivities or digestive issues.

It’s all connected.

The “Perfect Storm” That Starts Early

The next question parents often ask is:

How does a child’s nervous system get stuck in this stress mode in the first place?

This is where something we call the Perfect Storm comes into play.

These stressors can start affecting the nervous system very early in life.

Prenatal Stress

During pregnancy, a baby’s nervous system is developing rapidly.

If a mother experiences significant stress during pregnancy, cortisol can pass through the umbilical cord and influence the baby’s developing nervous system.

Birth Interventions or Birth Trauma

Birth can also place significant stress on the delicate upper neck and brainstem.

Interventions like:

  • C-sections
  • Forceps
  • Vacuum extraction
  • Long pushing phases

Can place tension on the upper cervical spine where the brainstem and vagus nerve live.

This area is incredibly important for regulating the nervous system.

Early Childhood Stress

Then come the early life stressors many parents know all too well.

Colic.
Reflux.
Ear infections.
Latching challenges.
Frequent antibiotics.

Over time, these stressors can push the nervous system into a constant fight or flight state.

When the Stress Response Gets Stuck

Your nervous system operates using two major modes.

One is the sympathetic nervous system, which acts like a gas pedal. This controls the fight-or-flight response.

The other is the parasympathetic nervous system, which acts like a brake pedal. This controls rest, digestion, healing, and immune regulation.

Both systems are necessary.

The problem happens when the gas pedal gets stuck.

Imagine your laptop with dozens of tabs open.

At first, it works fine.

But eventually everything slows down… freezes… and crashes.

That’s what happens when a child’s nervous system stays stuck in stress mode for too long.

Chronic stress hormones like cortisol start flooding the body.

And excessive cortisol does two major things:

  • Weakens proper immune function
  • Triggers inflammatory responses to harmless triggers

That’s when allergies start appearing.

Why Allergy Medications Don’t Solve the Problem

Most traditional allergy treatments focus on suppressing symptoms.

Antihistamines, for example, try to block the body’s histamine response.

Sometimes they provide temporary relief.

But they don’t actually fix the underlying problem.

And they often come with side effects like:

  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Mood changes
  • Behavior challenges

Some medications can even stimulate an already overwhelmed nervous system even further.

Another common approach is simply avoiding allergens.

Staying indoors.

Skipping outdoor play.

Limiting exposure.

While that might reduce symptoms, it doesn’t restore health.

And it definitely limits a child’s quality of life.

How Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Helps

This is where a neurologically-focused approach becomes so important.

At Thrive Chiropractic, we focus on restoring balance to the nervous system so the body can regulate itself again.

The first step is using INSiGHT Scans to measure how your child’s nervous system is functioning.

These scans help us identify areas where subluxation and stress are keeping the nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight mode.

From there, we create a personalized care plan using gentle, specific chiropractic adjustments.

These adjustments help:

  • Release stored tension in the spine and nervous system
  • Improve vagus nerve function
  • Activate the parasympathetic brake pedal
  • Restore proper immune system regulation

When the nervous system becomes balanced again, the immune system can finally respond appropriately instead of overreacting.

In many cases, that means the body stops seeing harmless pollen as a threat.

Helping Your Child Thrive This Allergy Season

Seasonal allergies can be frustrating for kids and parents alike.

No child wants to spend spring stuck indoors with tissues and medications.

And no parent wants to watch their child struggle year after year.

The key is understanding that allergies often aren’t just about the environment.

They’re about regulation.

When the nervous system is balanced, the immune system works the way it was designed to.

If your child struggles with seasonal allergies, sinus issues, or immune challenges, it may be time to look deeper.

Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care helps address the root cause so kids can heal from the inside out.

If you’re ready to learn more about how this approach can help your child, our team at Thrive Chiropractic would love to help guide you.

Because every child deserves the chance to run outside, breathe easy, and truly thrive.
